The Winlock School District is nearing the end of their free summer meal program. Between now and Thursday, Aug. 14, free breakfast and lunch are available to children 18 years of age and younger at the Winlock Miller Elementary School cafeteria between 8 and 8:30 a.m., and 12 and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
The district is also accepting donations of school supplies for their Stuff the Bus program, which will run officially Aug. 25 through 29, but donations are being accepted at the district office right now. For more info on this unique and beneficial fundraiser, call the district at (360) 785-3582.
The Winlock Lions Club is getting ready for Kids Night Out Bingo on Aug. 20 and donations of school supplies are being sought. Scheduled for 6:30 p.m., the cost is one can of non-perishable food for one bingo card, with proceeds to be given to the Winlock/Vader Food Bank, while kids will be treated to free ice cream and cookies. For additional information, call (360) 785-0178.
If you get the paper early enough, this Tuesday the Winlock Timberland Library will feature local author Beth Peterson speaking about her new book, "Life After Lightning," from 6 to 8 p.m. The book chronicles Peterson's near-death experiences, having been twice struck by lightning. The result has been extensive physical and emotional damage, multiple surgeries and a lengthy recovery.
On Wednesday, the library presents LabARTory as part of their summer reading program, which provides summer science projects for kids of all ages. Later that day, a scavenger hunt will be taking place, where kids will search for three hidden pictures in a race for a small prize.
On Friday, local Whovians are encouraged to take part in the Doctor Who Fest at the library from 2 to 4 p.m., intended for teens. This is the party that's bigger on the inside, with Doctor Who-inspired crafts and snacks. Refreshments provided by the Friends of the Winlock Timberland Library.
