Firefighters Patrick Jacobson, left, and Stephen Hudspeth with Mrs. Matheson's first grade class.
Firefighters are on the job every day. They are there to take care of the emergencies that arise every day, meaning that their work attendance is very important.
The students of Mrs. Matheson's first grade class at Winlock Elementary also take attendance very seriously. Every student came to school for 20 days in a row. In reward, they were given a chance to vote on whom they wanted to come to lunch, and the class chose our local firefighters.
On Feb. 1, Lt. Patrick Jacobson and Stephen Hudspeth, who just joined the Winlock crew, joined the class for lunch. Everyone shared stories about how important attendance is and named their favorite character in the animated series Paw Patrol, in which a boy named Ryder leads a pack of rescue dogs. Paw Patrol character Marshall, who has the abilities of a firefighter, seems to be the class favorite.
Students learned that, like firefighters, they have an important job to do as well. They learned they need to be in school every day in order to learn to read, write, and solve math problems. This readies them to become an adult and get a job in order to be able to take care of both themselves and their families.
Thank you so much to our firefighters for joining Mrs. Matheson's first grade class. A big thank you also goes out to the students for choosing our local heroes to have lunch with and discuss the importance of attendance. It's a lesson we should all live by: Go to school or work every day if you can!
