The donations give us the extra things for our shelves in order to provide more variety for our clients.
Many people have brought to my attention the questions of expiration dates and best used by dates wondering if they are OK to donate.
The dates on the items are NOT governed by the food industry, they are ONLY a date issued by the manufacturer to guarantee freshness. Every manufacturer uses different guidelines for this. It is always suggested to use the smell and taste test.
The “SELL BY” date tells the store how long to display the product on their shelf.
“BEST IF USED BY OR BRFORE” date is for the best flavor or quality not for purchase or safety.
“USE BY” is determined by the manufacturer for peak of quality.
Unopened dry goods are good for 9months to one year, condiments such as catsup, mayonnaise, etc. 1-1½ yrs. And peanut butter 3-4 years.
I hope this helps those of you who question what can be donated.
Thank you all again for the great support.
