Local volunteers help ready new trash cans at Winlock City Hall on Saturday for distribution throughout downtown during the 12th month of Clean Up the Coop, a community group holding cleanup events the second Saturday of each month. February will mark the one-year anniversary of the group's first cleanup project, and efforts are being ramped up to increase volunteer support.
Area volunteers are preparing for the first anniversary of Clean Up the Coop, a community organization dedicated to beautifying and improving the city of Winlock.
Organized by member of the Winlock Lions Club in late 2013, the group's first cleanup day was held in February of last year, with efforts expected to be bolstered for next month's projects.
Group leader Viola Chickese said she expects volunteers will again start to meet on the Thursdays before a cleanup project to help plan and coordinate efforts, as had been done when the group first began, and said a greater number of improvement projects, including the planting of trees and shrubs around town, the acquisition of fixtures such as park benches and trash cans, as well as opportunities to improve some of the older buildings downtown, have been available through a grant from BNSF awarded to the group last summer.
The planning meetings are expected to be held at the Winlock Assembly Church of God, while the projects are still scheduled to take place the second Saturdays of the month starting at 10 a.m., unless otherwise noted.
