Willapa Valley edged rival South Bend in girls' track at Naselle in the 11-team Comette Invite last Tuesday (April 22). Raymond finished fourth.
“Tuesday, the girls took the Comet Invite, which was a good win for us,” Willapa Valley HS Head Track and Field Coach Dave Ege told the Herald.
“Hannah Dykes had the lone victory in the triple jump,” Raymond HS head track coach Mike Tully told the Herald. “Aiysha Garcia had a solid day with top-5 finishes in all three throwing events and the 400.”
South Bend's Emily Sanchez was the only athlete to win two individual events, including the long jump and 200 meters.
There were several more local winners, including Willapa Valley's Lauren Friese (pole vault), Jessica Cook (800 meters), Kate Rockett (javelin), Shania Barton (high jump), Dominique Kudasik (3200), and South Bend's Kathryn Staats (shot put), Kaelani Collins (100 meters), and Traci Hoffman (1600), and Raymond's Hannah Dykes (triple jump).
The Lady Indians also won two of the three relay races with Alison Funkhouser, Morgan Patterson, Sanchez and Collins in both the 4 by 100 and 4 by 200.
Willapa Valley competes at North Beach Thursday and heads to Ilwaco Tuesday. South Bend and Raymond travel to Naselle tomorrow. Coach Tully said he's hoping to take some athletes to Shelton on Saturday. South Bend and Raymond willl also send athletes to Ilwaco Tuesday.
