Fundraising has also been going strong for the community Fourth of July celebration, with organizers reporting close to $2,000 raised so far. Head fireworks technician Reggie Smith said the show this year is expected to last at least 30 minutes, while area vendors including craftspeople, restaurants and horticulturists are expected to take part. Vendor spaces remain available, as well as donation opportunities, and those interested are encouraged to contact Judy Costello at (360) 295-3036. Organizers are also seeking a family-friendly band for the event and interested parties should inquire, keeping in mind organizers are planning to offer a paid gig.
But before Independence Day, Vader still has the annual Country Cruisers Car Club's Car Show to look forward to just two weeks from Saturday on June 6 at McMurphy Park. This event will feature cars and vendors from around the region and is free to attend. For those entering the show, the fee is $15 per vehicle, with options for finished or unfinished vehicles and more than one entry per person. For more information, call Club President Al Bangs at (360) 827-1899.
City Hall has announced the sale of their old police cruiser to the City of Toledo for $13,000, bolstering the funds available in Vader's general budget. Sale of the vehicle had been anticipated by officials when planning this year's expenses, and actually ended up being around $5,000 more than expected. The cruiser, as well as a number of other law enforcement-related items, have been unused by the city after the Vader Police Department dissolved in 2011, leading the city to contract for police coverage from local agencies instead.
The Vader Assembly of God Church will be holding their monthly food giveaway outside the post office this Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the next opening of their food bank on Tuesday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information on these and other church programs, call (360) 295-3756.
We apologize for printing the wrong date for the church's presentation of guest speaker Bill Shaw last week, as there had been miscommunication regarding the day of the event. We hope area residents were able to attend and enjoy Shaw's presentation, and encourage the community to continue supporting the church's local events.
