Saturday is May Day in the little city of Vader, and the community will be bustling with games, events and other festivities. It's not too late to become involved, and those seeking a vendor booth should call Judy Costello at (360) 295-3036, while parade entry forms can be found at J & G Grocery and Cedar Village IGA, or by calling Janet Charlton at (360) 295-3011.
Correction: The date of the Country Cruisers Car Club's next car show is June 6, contrary to reports in last week's column. Thanks for the gentle reminders from club leadership. The show will be at McMurphy Park and the entry fee is $15, with options for finished or unfinished vehicles and more than one entry per person. For more information, call Club President Al Bangs at (360) 827-1899.
City Hall has announced their second and last round of applications to take part in a grant opportunity for free side sewer replacement for qualifying residents. Those approved last year had their side sewers replaced over the winter, and residents who missed the last funding cycle have another chance to apply at this time. Workshops to help explain the applications and requirements have been scheduled for this Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., and again on Thursday, May 7, at the same time. The funding is available to residents within low to moderate income levels, with officials noting the income of the occupants, rather than the property owner, is to be taken into account. For more information, call City Hall at (360) 295-3222.
The City Council is continuing to discuss formation of a new employee pay scale policy, as previous raises requested by Mayor Ken Smith for city staff have been contested for lack of such a policy. The council is expected to hold a workshop on this topic prior to their May 14 meeting and the public is invited to attend.
Many residents are eager to see the outcome of the next election of city officials, as the offices of Mayor and City Councilors 2, 4 and 5 are up for grabs. Such a number could mean a significant shift in public policy, and those hoping to join the race may file with the Lewis County Auditor's Office between May 11 and 15. For more information, call the Auditor's Office at (360) 740-1164, or visit https://wei.sos.wa.gov/county/lewis/en/pages/home.aspx.
The next opening of the Vader Assembly of God Church's food bank will be May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by their monthly food giveaway outside the post office May 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information on these and other church programs, call (360) 295-3756.
