Lady Warhawks Alive in Playoff Chase
The Lady Warhawks remained alive in a District IV playoff chase April 30 with a 3-4, 15-10 split with Kalama on Tuesday evening in 1A Trico League play.
In game one, the Lady Warhawks took a -30 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, but then allowed six errors in the remaining innings. Dustee Alvord scored all three runs for T/W including an inside-the-park home run.
In game two, The Lady Warhawks got off to a quick start by scoring nine runs in the first two innings. Kennedi Collins contributed four hits included a double. Karlee Coverdell was 4 for 5 scored a run and three RBIs while Cassie McGeary had three knocks for the home team.
Toledo/Winlock is now 6-10 on the season and 6-6 in the Trico League with two remaining league games at Stevenson. One victory on Tuesday will assure T/W of a spot in the District IV tournament.
Castle Rock Upsets United at Home
Despite losing 8-0 in their last meeting, Castle Rock surprised Toledo/Winlock United 1-0 for their first victory of the season on Senior night in 1A Trico League soccer on Tuesday. CR crowded their goal area with extra defenders and shut our United will coming up with a breakaway goal late in the game. The Rocket's lone goal came from Tristan Gilman. Castle Rock's goalkeeper Travis Foxglove had 14 saves in the victory.
The Rockets finished the season with a loss to Woodland at 1-12 over all and 1-11 in the Trico League.
United Soccer Earn District Playoff
With a 3-0 victory over Stevenson on Thursday evening, Toledo/Winlock United qualified for the #3 seed from the Trico League for this week's District IV soccer playoffs. Adair Garibay scored two goals and Alexus Sanchez added the third as United earn the win. Juan Gutierrez assisted with one of Garibay's goals
T/W will play Hoquiam, the number two team from the Evergreen Conference at Aberdeen on Tuesday evening in their first playoff game.
Kalama Ends Warhawk Season with Split
Needing a sweep to earn a playoff birth, the Toledo/Winlock Warkhawks baseball team fell one game short despite a 9 inning, classic extra inning battle resulting in a 2-1 loss to Trico League Rival Kalama. Mack Gaul pitched all nine innings and recorded 14 strike-outs.
In the second game, Toledo-Winlock came out with a vengeance and recorded three runs in the first inning, another in the fourth and then ran away with a 12-3 win in the nightcap.
"It just makes me sick that we couldn't push across more runs in the first game and then the very next inning we score three," said Head Coach Brian Demarest.
Wes Kuzminsky went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI for Toledo-Winlock while Cody Meier was 2 for 4 and stole three bases. Freshman Kolton Korpi was 1 for 3 in both games. Toledo/Winlock have three freshmen that are every day starters and will return next season.
Castle Rock Captures League Title
With a doubleheader split at La Center, the Castle Rock boys baseball team claimed their first Trico League title since 1988. The Rockets one game one in extra innings 3-2, but lost the night cap 12-7.
Kole Beckers pitched seven innings but until the extra frames, CR could only look for offence. Riley Grothen knocked a hit to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning.
In the 9th inning, Carson Horton singled to become a base runner and then scored from first base on a T.J. Catlin double. Nate Williamson came in to slam the door on the Wildcats by striking out the side.
Andy Voelker went 4 for 6 over the two games while Robbie Simpson had two doubles in the series.
CR will begin play in the District IV Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Castle Rock Tennis Still Undefeated
CR have been dominant in the singles competition and good enough in doubles to remain undefeated after victories over Northwest Christian and Seton Catholic last week. Singles winners on Wednesday in Lacey included Singles winners were Jamie Skeie, Faith Stein and Mikayla LaFontaine (6-2, 6-4). On Friday singles winners included all three players. Tiffany Tomlin and Marissa Cloke won a doubles match against Northwest Christian while Alexis Everett and Elsie Martinez and the team of Tiffany Tomlin and Marissa Cloke scored victories against Seton Catholic.
Castle Rock is now 10-0 on the season and will host White Salmon on Tuesday.
