Resident Sharron Ross has been selected as the next Vader City Council Member after a tiebreaker vote that took place during the council’s Feb. 19 meeting.
Nominated by Council Member Kevin Flynn, Ross was not available to be sworn in that night due to a sudden death in her family, but is expected to take the oath of office March 5. The need for a new council member arose after Lois Wilson resigned Feb. 5 due to ongoing health concerns, and Ross will be expected to serve on an interim basis until the position is filled during the November elections.
The decision to appoint Ross came during a tie vote broken by Mayor Ken Smith, as Flynn and Council Member Janet Charlton supported her appointment while Council Members Andy Wilson and Rodney Allison attempted to vote the appointment down.
Flynn said he has personally spoken with Ross to determine her willingness to serve and said she would bring a conservative mindset to city leadership. Neither Wilson nor Allison articulated their opposition to Ross, and neither offered alternative nominations.
City Attorney Jim Buzzard said Ross may still decline her appointment and, if that were the case, the council would have to appoint a different nominee during their next meeting. However, attempts by council members to identify residents willing to serve resulted in no nominations other than Ross that night.
If Ross were to serve in her appointed position, it would not preclude her from running in the November election to maintain her seat, though her term is officially scheduled to end after election results were finalized in December.
