Happy Boxing Day! Boxing Day in Canada and the UK is the day after Christmas Day. Traditionally, it was a day when employers distributed money, food, cloth (material) or other valuable goods to their employees. In modern times, it is an important day for sporting events and the start of the post-Christmas sales.
Here’s hoping everyone has spent or will get to spend quality time with friends and/or family during this season of love and joy. The beginning of a new year is also marked with the days getting a bit longer every day. While the weather may not show much improvement for a while, every few minutes of daylight can "make your day".
Some love and joy got sprinkled in Ryderwood the day the power was out for 12 hours. A crew had the generator at the Café running by 7 p.m. Coffee was on ASAP and everybody brought food from home and breakfast was fixed for anyone who showed up. Soup and pizza were available at lunchtime–some food came from emergency supplies while others cleaned out their fridge or freezer. Anyway, it was another indication of how residents in Ryderwood look out for each other.
Much of this same crew will host the New Year’s Eve Chili Supper at the Café on Monday, Dec. 31. All are welcome to come–for a donation (or not) you can get chili with cornbread, chilidogs, fixin’s for both and non-alcoholic punch. Come around 6 p.m., bring a salad or dessert, and plan for a fun evening. Food and punch will be served ‘til they’re gone. Stay for music, puzzles and games, but don’t be offended if some folks leave before the ball drops in Times Square…
