Here's hoping everyone is staying warm during the super cold weather snap. While we didn't get the high winds and snow, it was a fair amount colder than predicted or recorded. I believe that the nearest official weather recording stations are in Toledo and Castle Rock, where the river has a warming effect. For our little valley, the cold air (or rain) comes in from the coast, encounters Abernathy Mountain and drops its "load". For example, our low on the morning of Oct. 15 was 16º while the "official" reading was 27º.
Moving right along, it's almost Thanksgiving and I gather most figured out my error last week on the Sr. Nutrition meal - it's Oct. 18 instead of Oct. 11. Meanwhile, there is the annual community Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner on Thanksgiving Day at 1 p.m. Friends and family are welcome; just sign up in Community Hall so the Social Club will know how much turkey, ham and potatoes to purchase and cook. While a full house of Ryderwoodites and their families is not uncommon, room can always be made for a few more. Contact Sharon at (360) 353-8745 for info or to volunteer.
Friday night's dinner at the Café will be Chicken Cordon Bleu with a new volunteer chef. Welcome, Doug! The meals are served at 5 p.m. and are always all-inclusive from beverage and salad to dessert. Call Linda at (360) 295-0875 by Wednesday to make reservations. The price per meal is $9 with all proceeds supporting the Café. Don't forget burgers and soup at the Café on Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. They are the best around and the price is right. These meals at these prices would not be possible without the all-volunteer staff. Volunteers are especially needed at this time as the snowbirds head south...
Saturday evening is the next Open Mic at the Café at 7 p.m. and Sunday has another Ice Cream Social and Card Bingo. All folks are welcome to attend any of these events.
The Senior Nutrition Lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 25, will be Chicken Divan with roasted potatoes, veggies and melon. The requested donation for these meals is $3, which is an incredible bargain. Call Jan at (360) 295-0597 by 6 p.m. on Monday to make or break reservations.
