"This was a disappointing loss for the girls," SBHS head coach Jacki Sanchez said. "We really struggled with consistency all evening. In game one we had eight drop balls and missed three serves. It is very difficult to compete when you have so many unforced errors; especially when you only lose games by about six points. We are not a big team, and Raymond did an excellent job of blocking at the net all evening. Their blocks got in our heads a bit, and so we backed down offensively and were limited on getting aggressive swings.
"Offensively, we were led by Emily Sanchez (12 kills), Paola Razo (5 kills, 7 blocks), McKenzie Salas (3 kills), Rielly Myers (2 kills, 4 blocks), and Alison Funkhouser (2 kills)," Coach Sanchez said. "Myers, Funkhouser, Sanchez, and Morgan Patterson really did a great job of setting the ball to the pins. Handling a lot of balls passing, we were led by Sanchez's 13 digs and 75 percent serve-receive and Funkhouser's 14 digs and 71 percent serve-receive. Serving 100 percent for the evening were Paola Razo and Nikki Manlow. If we take this loss as a learning experience, we will be a better team for it. We need to not get down on ourselves if we make a mistake, always play aggressively, and most importantly have fun."
Raymond upped its record to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific League. The Lady Tribe slipped to 4-6 and 3-3.
South Bend 3,
Tacoma Baptist 0
The Lady Indians turned back host Tacoma Baptist 26-24, 25-7, 25-14 last Tuesday (Oct. 14).
"We started the evening not playing very consistent, so we struggled at the beginning of game one," Coach Sanchez said. "About halfway through game one, the girls really began to communicate well on the floor so our play picked up. Rielly Myers, Morgan Patterson, and Emily Sanchez did a great job of setting up the offense for us in this match.
"Offensively, we were led by Paola Razo (3 blocks) and Sanchez with six kills each, Myers three kills (3 blocks), and Alison Funkhouser and McKenzie Salas with one kill each," Coach Sanchez said.
"Defensively, Sanchez had 15 digs and Patterson 10 digs," Coach Sanchez added. "At the service line, the team did a fabulous job going 95 percent. I thought this was a good win for us. It was nice to see the girls respond a little after struggling at the beginning of game one. I was also proud of how consistent the girls played in this match."
