Lewis County Fire District 15 Commissioner Randy Pennington speaks during a ceremony May 6 at Newtown, Conn., to honor the six educators who were killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary School attach Dec. 14. District 15 had awarded them their Fire Service Medal of Honor for acts of valor while defending their students against gunman Adam Lanza, and the medals were given to family members of the fallen. Also at the ceremony were recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, who bestowed family members with their Citizen Service Before Self Honors Medal.

Pennington (right) and wife Carrie Pennington (left) present a medal to Bill Sherlach, husband of school psychologist Mary Sherlach. Carrie Pennington had flown with Randy Pennington as a representative of District 15 as well as Winlock Miller Elementary School, where she is a teacher.
