students beginning in 7th grade all the way through 12th grade to prepare them for college and future career possibilities. The purpose of this program is to increase the number of students from low-income, high poverty areas who graduate from high school and go to college. GEAR UP leaders work with students in groups and individually to target their interests and help guide them toward career exploration. They also provide opportunities for field trips to colleges and universities, career field trips, tutoring, as well as encouraging involvement in sports and other extra-curricular activities.

There will be several activities this week (September 22-26) at WVHS to highlight National GEAR UP Week. Monday and Tuesday all students and staff are encouraged to wear their college gear or favorite college colors. The class with the most college spirit wins a prize! There will also be games, trivia questions, and a Dream Wall where all students can share their plans for after high school. The goal is to get all students excited about college and all of their career possibilities.
