NASELLE – The South Bend girls opened the track and field season with a win at the soaking-wet six-team Naselle Invitational last Thursday. The boys placed third of seven teams.
Sophomore Emily Sanchez and junior Kathryn Staats won two individual events each for the Lady Indians. Sanchez also anchored the winning 400 and 800-meter relay races. Sanchez crossed the finish line first in the 400 meters and won the long jump. Staats won the shot put and javelin.
Also winning for the Lady Indians were Emily Burbank (100-meter high hurdles), Tammy Kousonhsavath (triple jump) and Makenzie Russell (high jump). Also running on winning relays were Kousonhsavath, Kaelani Collins and Morgan Patterson (4 by 1) and Patterson, Alison Funkhouser and Collins (4 by 2).
Myranda Curtis placed third in the shot put and javelin and Edith Razo was fifth in the discus. Burbank was also fifth in the 100 meters.
South Bend won the meet with 124 points, followed by Ocosta (92), Wahkiakum (78), Toledo (50), Wishkah Valley (44) and Naselle (32).
In the boys’ meet, South Bend finished a strong third with 94 points. Wishkah Valley won with 111¾ points and Toledo was second at 101½. Wahkiakum took fourth place with 53½ points, followed by Naselle (53), Ocosta (37¼) and North River (25).
Dennis Johnson won two events for the Indians, including the long jump and triple jump. The Indians won the 4 by 100 relay with Nathan Kunke, Austin Lewis, Jose Bucio and Cohen Hansen.
Also for SBHS, Spencer Case was second in both the javelin and discus and placed fourth in the high jump. Bucio was a runner-up in the 800 meters and placed sixth in the 1600. Lewis wound up second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and fourth in the javelin. Kunke was third in the 200 meters and seventh in the 100. Tristan Hansen finished third in the long jump. Dakota Halverson wound up seventh in the discus and shot put, and Cohen Hansen place seventh in the javelin.
South Bend hosts a meet on Thursday; expected to attend are Raymond, Ocosta, Wishkah Valley, Naselle and Mary M. Knight.
