The Lady Seagulls (14-2) stayed alive at the District Volleyball Tournament by defeating Adna 25-18, 25-18, 25-23, Saturday at Raymond.
Raymond's standout sophomore Karlee Freeman injured her shoulder during warm-ups before the Adna match. Freeman played and had 18 digs and 5 kills. Hailee Smith led the Gulls' attack with 12 kills.
Raymond next plays Wednesday (5:30) at Tenoski Gym in Menlo vs Toutle Lake or Friday Harbor in an elimination match. The Lady Gulls must win that game, and one of their next two, to claim one of the bi-district's seven State berths.
Raymond lost in the opening round to Onalaska, 25-17, 26-24, 25-23, at Seagull gym Saturday. Freeman had 16 kills and 15 digs, and Smith added seven kills.
Raymond 3, Ocosta 0
Raymond batted down Ocosta, 29-27, 25-15, 26-24, at Westport on Oct. 26. Freeman had 20 kills and Smith had 13.
"Ocosta has strong middles and we had a hard time figuring them out in the first set. We also made some ball-handling mistakes and missed some serves," RHS head coach Bob Swogger told the Herald. "We were also very tentative with our offense. In the second set, we passed and served well. We basically played closer to our potential. Our serving and attacking picked up towards the middle of the set. Overall we were able to win the big points and keep our mental focus."
Raymond's junior varsity won its match to improve to 12-1.
"They've done a great job of having good ball control all season long, being consistent servers, and getting off attacks," Swogger said.
Lady Seagulls 3, Ilwaco 0
Raymond crushed Ilwaco on Senior Night (Oct. 28) 25-12, 25-15, 25-10. Freeman and Smith collected 10 kills piece.
"Against Ilwaco things went better and our offense clicked well," Swogger said.
Raymond ended up second in the Pacific League with a 9-1 mark.
