Happy Birthday: Ruth Herren turns 100

Ruth Herren

Ruth Herren is celebrating her 100th birthday, it seems just like yesterday she was interviewed for her 99th birthday. Ruth will celebrate her 100th birthday on April 14 with a special coffee hour at Toledo Presbyterian Church around 11:30 a.m. following the 10:30 a.m. service. Ruth is a retired teacher with many years experience teaching first grade in area schools. She also worked for Boeing as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII. Ruth would like to invite her friends and everyone to attend such a wonderful day for such a special lady.

Ruth graduated from Centralia High School in 1937. She attended Centralia College where she obtained her two-year degree. She continued her education at Western Washington University in Bellingham for a year and a summer where she earned her teaching certificate. Ruth stated, "In those days you could teach with a three-year degree."

Since then, Ruth taught at Centralia, Vader and Toledo. She married Bob Herren on July 13, 1947. During her first year of marriage she taught at Toledo High School. Ruth then took five years off to raise her daughters, Christine Watkins, born in 1948, and Mary Jo Pierce, born in 1950. Ruth also has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

After those five years, she returned to teaching at Vader Elementary School. She taught at Vader for 11 years, then she went back to Toledo until she retired after 35 years of teaching.

Ruth was very active in the Presbyterian Church women's class, she sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. She also volunteered through the Phoenix Center at Centralia College. "I enjoyed doing things like that. I also volunteered at the grade school to teach locals how to read," she stated.

Ruth and Bob have had the annual Threshing Bee on their property for over 40 years. A few years ago Ruth was named a "Big Cheese" at Toledo Cheese Days. She also is a regular at the Toledo Senior Center and still drives herself there.

Ruth is a special lady, her mind is sharp as a tack, she still has her laugh and she is a joy to visit with. What a special event to make it to 100 years old. Happy Birthday Ruth, you are loved by many and appreciated by the entire community for all you do.
