Twenty girls from South Bend School District attended an "Expanding Your Horizons" conference at South Puget Sound Community College on Saturday, March 7. The girls ranged in age from 6th-8th grade, but all had one thing in common, an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) careers. The conference was open to middle school aged girls with the goal of encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers and fostering awareness for careers for women in science and mathematics related areas. The conference offered workshops focusing on science and math, for example: "Microscopic Clues about the Past", "A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian", and "Got DNA?". South Bend students particularly enjoyed a workshop on chemistry that allowed them to make foam balls.
