Community Leader Cy Meyers passes

Cy Meyers

Cy Meyers was a leader in the community who for years served Winlock tirelessly and continued to work throughout his retirement years. Cy understood the words "serving your country" and he kept that attitude his entire life.

Cy was a World War II vet, serving in Iwo Jima when the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi. He was a tank mechanic during the war. Cy was proud of his years in the Marines. He helped the country win a war that was a hard fought battle.

Cy came to Winlock in 1960 with his wife Bonita and family. Cy immediately became involved in Winlock during those early years. He always felt it was his responsibility to give back and he did so in more ways than one.

Cy knew the importance of serving the community as well as his country. He was on the Winlock School Board for many years. He served on the Winlock City Council from 1992-1996 and elected to another term in 2004. He served only another 6 months as councilman before being appointed mayor. In July of 2004, he then ran for the office of mayor in November 2004 and was the elected mayor from 2004-2009.

Cy and Bonita (Bones) were married 60 years and if you knew them, you knew they were a perfect fit. For many years, while Bones was active in the community Cy was right by her side. They were Winlock and Winlock was Cy and Bonita.

Cy never tired of politics. He was involved for many years at the city, county and state level. Those who knew him knew he was always looking to do the best for those he represented. He never stopped working. He worked up to the time of his passing.

Cy was involved in politics, even helping the current Mayor Don Bradshaw win his bid for write in Mayor. Bradshaw stated "Cy arrived here from Hood River, Oregon, in the 1960's and worked for Allegre Egg Company. After years with Allegre, he went to work for the Winlock School District. He was instrumental in bringing Cardinal Glass to Winlock and moving Winlock's sphere of influence in the community. Cy was a community leader and he will be missed.'

Cy was proud of his children. He said, ""My greatest achievement are my children. My kids are all Christians. There is nothing better than knowing your kids are saved." He was a proud father and grandfather. Cy was a Man of God, he went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 3rd. His son Sam said it best "Dad firmly believed with all his heart that Jesus Christ was the son of God and his personal savior."

Cy is survived by his children, David and wife Virginia, Vancouver; Jason, Vancouver; Lisa (Meyers) Stalnaker and Sam, Winlock, Washington. He has several grandchildren Kirsten, Rachel, Michelle, John Vincent (Cy) and Rebecca.

A memorial service for Cy will be on Friday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Napavine Assembly of God. A potluck will take place after the service.
