CHEHALIS - The week following Christmas has seen an increase of false emergency calls to the Lewis County 911 Communications Center. The Chehalis Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls from a child playing with a disconnected cell phone.
Because of the nature of cell phones the Police could only pinpoint the general area where the call came from and they spent the time to track down the child to make sure that it was not a real emergency.
Cell phones without service are still able to dial 911 as required by law. To avoid tying up 911 lines and dispatchers, remove the battery from the cell phone if it is given to a child to play with.
