Abandon Rivers and Harbor bill. Senate adopts substitute measure offered by commerce committee.

Much satisfaction was felt here the first of the week over a telegram received from Senator Jones at Washington, in which he announced that he had been ale to secure the restoration to the rivers and harbors bill of the item providing for the further improvement of Willapa Harbor and river, and carrying an initial appropriation of $50,000. While this appropriation was only half that contained in the original item passed by the house, it was felt that the restoration of the project after it had been omitted by the Senate committee was a triumph for the people of this harbor and great hope was felt that the bill carrying it would pass.

Engineer says Columbia to Sound waterway possible.

The proposed Columbia River to Puget Sound waterway by the way of Willapa Harbor may prove to be feasible, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer told the Portland chamber of commerce last Thursday. Lt. Col. H. E. Dewey, deputy district army engineer said, "We in Seattle (where his office is located) are sold on it and hope to build it."

County juvenile office levy to be asked.

The Pacific County commission Monday told the voters, in effect, to put their money where their mouth is on a juvenile officer program. The commission decided to call 3 special elections to be held in conjunction with the general election November 3 to determine whether or not a special levy of 3/4 of one mill shall be assessed to help pay the costs of a juvenile program.

State like Raymond for prison work camp: Briggs

We're number one," Raymond Mayor Marshall Briggs said Monday as he prepared to welcome three state Department of Correction officials to the city Thursday. The officials will be in town to look over the Butte Creek site where Briggs wants them to locate a 200-bed prison work camp, and to talk to an invited list of guests at a noon luncheon.

Say merged school $7 million cheaper.

The same architectural consulting firm which recommended and $8 million school program to Raymond has told South Bend it could enlarge its high school to serve both districts for $1 million. Architects West of Seattle presented its program to Raymond school officials last February. The school board is in the process of hiring a financial consultant, but has made no decision on a proposal which would reportedly supplement $5.5 million in state aid with a $2.5 million local bond issue.
