My favorite 4-H memory is when some girls from Menlo formed a Jug Band and were chosen to represent Menlo at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, Illinois, in December of 1954.
Darlene Wiseman and Marlene Aust played toy flutes. Alberta Hilts played two Pepsi bottles, Marlene Haerling and Wanda Pehl played Coke bottles and Barbara Clements played bass with the jugs.
We traveled to Chicago by train with our chaperone from the county extension office service. We toured the city of Chicago, stayed in the Conrad Hilton Hotel, played our songs on the Don McNeil Breakfast Club, saw the stage play "Oklahoma" starring Florence Henderson, saw the International Livestock Exposition and entertained at many banquets. Our sponsor was the U.S. Rubber Company.
It was a trip to remember and something kids back then rarely were lucky enough to do.
