Many folks in the local area may not realize that we have a well-known and extremely knowledgeable self-defense and martial arts instructor right here in our back yard, or that he's been offering classes for the last 10 years in Winlock. He offers programs that cover Tae Kwon Do, Kick-Boxing, Wrestling, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Muay Thai (a form of kick boxing from Thailand), and Women's Self Defense. Ages of instruction start at 3 years old but include adults of all ages.
Instructor Oskar Musgrove Wilhelm and his wife, Denise, have operated the dojo for over a decade, but there are concerns that decreased participation by the community may force them to close the facility very soon. The dojo is located on the bottom floor of the Winlock Community Center, and having the classes held there helps not only the patrons of the center thru training and exercise, but also our community as a whole by supporting a venue for us all to utilize.
Master Musgrove is a 4th degree black belt in Sung Moo Kwan, and was taught by Master Chung at Northwest Tae Kwon Do in Lakewood, Washington. Master
Musgrove has an extensive fight history; competing in world-class venues such as Las Vegas, Canada, Australia, and Thailand. His expertise in martial arts and training are unsurpassed by any in our local markets. Master Musgrove has an excellent method and practice. He works extremely well with his students of all ages and skill levels, modifying his approach to suit each individual. His rapport with his students is amazing to see in action, and the results speak for themselves. He builds the physical and mental strength of his pupils, while balancing service, respect, and dedication with his programs.
Classes are extremely reasonably priced, and held at times that don't interfere with most people's schedules. You don't even need to come every day, though it is, of course, recommended. It would be very sad to lose this valuable resource for our local communities, but it is up to us to help reinvigorate the dojo and work on seeing members of our local community participating in, and again winning competitions at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
Master Musgrove (or just Sensei as he's called by his students) can be reached at 360-304-9112, or you can just show up at 4:30pm every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to the Winlock Community Center building to sign up for any of the classes (607 NW Kerron St, Winlock, the big blue building on WA-603). However, time is limited, unless more folks take this call to action and join the fun.
