Winlock High School hosted the 2016 Southwest Washington Massed Band festival on May 10th with 13 'B' schools participating. Total, there were about 290 high school band members packed in the high school from 9:00 AM until the concert which began at 7:00 PM.
The morning hours were spent with each school participating for judges. The 13 schools were split into two divisions, with Onalaska winning the Division I prize and Winlock winning the Division II prize. Winlock earned the top score overall though, and won the overall contest.
Currently there is a small rivalry between the bands of Winlock and Onalaska. It seems, according to band member Aliah Waterman, the two are always battling for the top prize.
Winlock band members all had various jobs throughout the morning, whether it be greeters, running water to the judges, or helping keep the hallways clear during school hours. Music booster parents prepared a dinner for all students in attendance and Mrs. Nanette Craft prepared a special lunch for the directors and judges.
The evening concert was held in the high school gym and the bleachers were packed. The highlight of the concert was the final score, a compilation of the Star Wars march themes. The Marches were directed by Mr. David Stingley (Onalaska) and he was dressed as a Jedi knight. Throughout the music the band was visited by Chewbacca and then Darth Vader. Lord Vader used his death grip on a good portion of the percussion section where they fell to the ground.
The concert and festival was a great success. Mr. Karl Scarborough, the director for Winlock, would like to thank the teachers and staff of the high school and middle school for their flexibility, and also thanked Mrs. Criss, Winlock's superintendent, for opening the event.
