The Vikings triumphed over the Warrenton Warriors 12-0 in the scrimmage after scoring two touchdowns early in the match.
Head Coach Greg Wonhoff felt very optimistic. “I couldn’t be more pleased with what I saw today. The intensity that we put out there will take us so far and help us to overcome inexperience. As each week goes on we’ll gain more experience. I’m just pleasantly surprised at how well these guys played this early in the season,” Wonhoff said.
The Vikings also won the passing league championship at the camp.
Wonhoff was excited to face off other teams in the upcoming season. We’re always excited about Raymond. North Beach, and of course South Bend, our traditional rivals,” Wonhoff said.
Running back Cody Buchanan broke his leg while running in a touchdown during one of the first plays of the scrimmage. The coaches are not yet aware of how the injury will limit his season. “We don’t know the extent of it. We’re hoping that it’s not something real serious. To be able to walk off the field like he did is a good sign,” Wonhoff said.
The Seagulls played in the camp’s finale game after being chosen as one of the best teams at the camp by other coaches. They came up short against Morton/White Pass after the Timberwolves scored in the second to last play of the match, ending the defensive stalemate at 0-6.
In response to the scrimmage, Head Coach Rob Clements said: “We feel good. . . The guys have been working hard in the weight room, and if they continue to do so we should do some good things this year.”
The Seagulls also won some awards at the camp. The offensive line won the lineman championship, the team beat the camp record in team lifting by 400 lbs. with a 5310 lb. lift, right guard and middle backer James Hamilton won “best overall heavy weight lineman”, and half back and outside linebacker Alex Sida won “best overall lightweight back”.
