This will be my last opportunity to remind readers of Ryderwood's Second Annual Ryderwood Sock Hop coming up this Saturday, June 20. Local DJ Steve Smith will spin your Rock 'n' Roll favorites from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Community Hall Auditorium. Dig out your "dancing duds" (or not) and come out to the end of SR 506 for a fun-filled afternoon. Everyone is invited to stay for the Potluck dinner that follows at 5 p.m. The Tip Jar will be donated to the Café.
There was a full house at last Saturday's Open Mic. Some visitors and a newbie to town joined the regulars for some very fine music. Open Mic is the 2nd Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Café. All are welcome.
The Flag Day Ceremony on Sunday, June 14, was also very well attended. Ryderwood's veterans (there are both VFW and AMVETS posts) put on a moving flag retirement ceremony. Many thanks to those who have developed the Memorial Garden.
Speaking of flags, if yours has been mysteriously replaced with a new one, blame it on the "Flag Fairy". It happened to me and I plan to put a donation in the Vader Fireworks jar.
Speaking of the 4th of July, lots will be going on here and there! Ryderwood's Parade starts at 10 a.m. with the Fire Trucks in the lead. Golf carts, riding mowers, old cars, kids on bikes, whatever - all are invited to participate.
The Parade ends at the Park where the Veterans will serve the best burgers, hot dogs, chili and drinks. Potluck side dishes, salads and desserts round out the meal. The Fire District will hold an Open House at Ryderwood's Fire Hall, and there will be a Cake/Pie Walk after the Picnic.
Meanwhile, Vader's activities will be well under way with another parade, more games, food and craft vendors, etc., starting at 2 p.m. Many of us "Ryderwoodites" will want to recuperate with a nap before participating. For sure, the highlight will be the fireworks that are scheduled to begin at 10 p.m.
Friday evening's dinner at the Café will be Andy and Linda's Baked Ham Dinner. As always, a beverage and salad, side dishes and dessert are included for the price of $9. Contact Linda at (360) 295-0875 by 6 p.m. on Wednesday to make or break reservations.
The Senior Nutrition lunch on Tuesday, June 23, will be Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, broccoli and apricots. The suggested donation is $3 per meal; take-outs and substitutions are available with advance notice. Call (360) 295-3813 or (360) 295-0597 before 6 p.m. the preceding Monday to make or break reservations.
