Ever look at an old jacket or pillow and think, “I’d sure like to hang on to that, if it weren’t in such terrible shape.”
Trash bins end up full of such items discarded in spite of their redeeming qualities, but these days a growing number of craftspeople are choosing to re-purpose and re-imagine what these items could be, including Vader residents Dianne and Elizabeth Gruginski.
This mother-in-law, daughter-in-law pair have been in the habit of “up-cycling” fabric, furniture, lamps and other items over the last 15 years, and they have recently opened Little Falls Vintage Design Studio, in Vader to, showcase their wares.
“We’ve kind of been doing little projects here and there,” said Elizabeth Gruginski, explaining the two began selling items online in 2007 and, after being met with success on eBay, decided to open a storefront.
Since opening in April, the Gruginskis have said they’ve been surprised by the volume of people stopping by to see what’s for sale. So far, lamps and other lighting fixtures have proven to be the most popular, while smaller gift basket items have also done well.
“They love to hear that something’s in town,” said Elizabeth Gruginski.
“We’re just so grateful to the community,” added Dianne Gruginski.
In addition to original items, vintage glassware, signage and other decorative items are available. Products from local businesses have also been featured, such as homemade fudge from Legacy Kitchen, and Scentsy products from local consultant Anita De La Rosa.
Additionally, Little Falls Vintage Design Studio will be holding their grand opening this Friday for Vader’s Foruth of July celebration, and plan to provide refreshments inside the store and host a free raffle for a store gift certificate.
