Without public confidence in the "integrity" of our law enforcement system with its many components, civil society eventually will collapse for lack of wide support. For this reason the thought of Mark McClain as Pacific County Prosecutor sends chills up my spine, not withstanding his mother's endorsement in last week's newspapers.
While living and working in Kittitas County, McClain served as a county commissioner and was a candidate for county prosecutor -- always as a committed, card carrying Republican. Further, in 2010 he was one of five fellow Republicans serving on the Kittitas County Republican Party Draft Platform committee. Hmmmm, strong credentials as a Republican, wouldn't you say? So being a committed Republican is not an issue. The real issue simply is how conveniently McClain sheds his past political identity for that of an "Independent" when running for public office in Pacific County.
Further cementing McClain's real identity is his list of mostly republican campaign donors. For a list click "http://www.pdc.wa.gov/qviewreports/candidates.aspx" www.pdc.wa.gov/qviewreports/candidates.aspx and go to candidates, local, and then Pacific County pages 26 and 27. You'll find this by going down to the bottom of the page and hitting "10" after which you can arrow ahead to page 27. Follow the prompts to meet the REAL Mark McClain. McClain's long history as a Republican and his list of financial supporters belie his "new identity" as a so-called Independent. How many aliases can a candidate claim and still maintain his integrity?
The pertinent question is who is the REAL INDEPENDENT? Incumbent Prosecutor (and longtime Democrat) David Burke has chosen to self-finance his re-election campaign. How refreshing! Burke is not depending on financial contributions. This keeps Burke squeaky clean, continuing to serve without the heavy burdened of IOUs. Now that's integrity! Burke has no reason to hide his political affiliation through his many years of service.
