Local vets honor Memorial Day

Local residents and veterans observe of Memorial Day service Monday at St Francis Mission, near Toledo, among eight scheduled services for the Napavine, Winlock, Toledo and Vader areas. Part of an annual tradition, the services are organized and led by members of American Legion Post 101 and VFW Post 3409, and assisted by Boy Scout Troop 324, all based in Winlock.

A 12-gun salute is fired by members of local veterans groups, using blanks in rifles dating as far back as WWI.

Taps is played by Winlock High School Junior Sarah Howsden plays taps at the end of the ceremony. Howsden has been participating since last year and expects to continue through her senior year, as Winlock High School is sought out by veterans for a student to help with the ceremonies. Of Howsden’s playing, veteran Dean Hendrickson said, “She doesn’t miss a note, does she.”
