We currently start band in the sixth grade at South Bend and because all students are given the opportunity to start band whether or not they can afford to rent or buy an instrument, our number of available school instruments is small. We are trying hard to work out the possibility of giving students in fifth grade the opportunity of starting band. Unfortunately, we do not have enough instruments for every child.
If you have an instrument at home that may be in need of repair or is collecting dust, we would love to have it. Our program is growing, as children get enthusiastic about music but out inventory of instruments is not. I personally started band in fifth grade on a trumpet that constantly fell apart in five different places, but starting band on that instrument changed my life forever. It opened the door for me to attend college and I now have a career that I love. That old trumpet is still with me to this day. It may not be in playable condition, but it has a special spot on a bookshelf in my office. Help me spread my love of music with my students by recycling your love of music and donating an instrument.
