The Vader City Council is expected to discuss adding a new member to its ranks after former council member Janet Charlton resigned Feb. 6.
A new council member could be appointed as soon as their next meeting tomorrow night, though Mayor Ken Smith has not indicated if he intends yet to do so.
Charlton's resignation letter has been described as simply stating she was leaving the council and not elaborating as to why, though recent months have seen her either late or entirely absent at often-weighty council meetings and workshops. She had expressed frustration during budget discussions in December, stating the demands on her position as a council member were requiring more time than she felt was reasonable.
If the council does not choose to appoint a new member tomorrow, they will have 90 days until the Lewis County Commissioners do so, in accordance with state law. Any such appointee will then serve until a new council member is chosen during the November General Election.
Those wishing to be considered for appointment are encouraged to submit a letter of intent to City Hall and can call (360) 295-3222 for more information. Those wishing to attend the next council meeting should be at City Hall tomorrow by 6:30 p.m.
The last council member to resign before Charlton was Lois Wilson, who stepped down this time last year due to health concerns.
