Renee Jensen, CEO of Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma and Tom Jensen, CEO of Grays Harbor Community Hospital were both recently awarded the prestigious Joe Hopkins Memorial Award for outstanding leadership.

The two were recognized by the Washington State Hospital Association for their excellence in serving their communities.

This is the final week before the elections are settled. This is something I really feel strongly about. I can't understand why such a large percentage of the registered voters don't use this right and vote. I guess, if people don't think their vote matters, it is something they just don't want to take time for.

After earning a first round bye, Willapa Valley opened District IV Volleyball Tournament play Saturday at Toutle Lake against a tough and tall Friday Harbor team. The Vikings lost 25-12, 25-23, 25-21.

City of Raymond's Budget Proposal

To the Editor:

The City of Raymond is attempting to balance its budget and so far the only solutions being considered are raising utility rates and increasing business taxes. Both of these initiatives lack merit. An increase in licenses and taxes will be a detriment to existing businesses and a deterrent to new ones. We should be supporting our local businesses, not exploiting them. We've lost three businesses in just the last several months, we can't afford to lose any more.

Hoffman, Heckman run their way to State

Local runners competed at the District Cross Country Meet at Onalaska. The weather greeted the runners with a soaking rain and gusts of wind. All of the runners from the District IV Class B schools were ready to compete. For the boys, the top 5 full teams and top 25 runners would qualify, and for the girls, the top 3 teams and top 15 runners would move on to the championships in Pasco this Saturday.

Lady Indians close out volleyball season

Willapa Valley ousted South Bend from the District IV Volleyball Tournament in four games in an elimination match Saturday at Toutle Lake High School by the score of 19-25, 25-14, 25-21-21 and 25-11. For the young South Bend team of head coach Jackie Sanchez, it was an achievement in itself to qualify for district.

Raymond woman sentenced to 9½ years

SOUTH BEND - Patricia Clifford, 33, of Raymond entered a guilty plea to possession of methamphetamine, bail jumping, and second degree assault and was sentenced to 5 years and 3 months, and was also sentenced to 4 years and 3 months months for drug possession and bail jumping in prison, followed by 18 months of Department of Corrections community custody. The sentencing took place in Pacific County Superior Court Friday afternoon.

Titans win league crown in undefeated style

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley are the undefeated champions of the Central League after a 49-6 mashing of Morton-White Pass on the road Thursday night. The Titans finished the regular season with a 9-0 record and now will focus on the post-season.

At the last stop on a 2 ½ year endeavor John Wiesman sat down with Pacific County and various other local health professionals from both the public and private sector in a meeting to discuss the health needs of the communities. Wiesman, the Washington State Secretary of Health and the top official in Department of Health, after his appointment to the seat by Governor Inslee, set a goal for himself to meet with every county within the first year.
